Startups: Free Year of Claude Team + $1,000 API Credits
If you run a startup, Anthropic just handed you a gift. On October 6, the company expanded its Claude for Startups program, and the deal is genuinely good: a full free year of Claude Team, the paid team plan, for up to five seats, plus $1,000 in API credits. That is real value, not a coupon code.
What you actually get
The package has four parts. First, the free year of Claude Team for up to five premium seats. Your whole team gets the paid version of Claude for writing, research, brainstorming, and day-to-day work. Second, $1,000 in API credits to build with Claude inside your own product or internal tools. Third, access to Claude Marketplace, where you can build plug-ins for the service. Fourth, virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team, which means direct access to the people who actually build the product.
Who qualifies
The bar is easy to clear. Your company qualifies if it was founded in the last five years, or if it received funding in the last two years. That covers most early-stage startups. You apply through the Claude for Startups page on claude.com. Anthropic announced the expansion as part of its SF Tech Week event, so this is fresh.
How to make it count
Free tools get wasted fast, so give the seats a job from day one. A few ideas that work for most small teams: use Claude Team for the writing nobody wants to do, like investor updates, job posts, and first drafts of everything. Use the API credits to prototype one AI feature in your product before you pay full price for it. If you run customer support, draft your canned responses with Claude and have a human approve them. And do not skip the office hours. Ask the Anthropic team how to keep your API costs down and how to structure prompts for your specific use case. That kind of advice is hard to find anywhere else.
The fine print
A free year is still a year. When it ends, you roll onto the regular paid plan, so make sure the seats earn their place before renewal time. Also, five seats for a team of twenty will create a scramble. Decide now who gets them: the people who will actually build the habit. And a rule that never changes: do not paste customer data, private code, or secrets into any chatbot, paid or free.
